Electricity Workers Seek Probe Of Members’ Arrest

Electricity workers have called on the Federal Government to commence investigation of the arrest of some of its union leaders by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) or the nation would be thrown into darkness.

The workers under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) in a statement issued in Lagos described the arrest as unprofessional.

The union claimed that the EFCC on January 13th arrested two of its officials, Mr. Babatunde Isaac, Head of Administration and Mr. Christopher Emeana, the Personal Assistant to the general secretary.

The statement signed by Mr. Reuben Orlu, NUEE’s Head of Information and Research warned that electricity workers would embark on a strike if the commission failed to apologise to NUEE.

Noting that the invasion of the union office and alleged harassment of its officials as suggestive of military action, the statement argued that under normal circumstances the EFCC would not have displayed such level of unprofessionalism.

The statement called on the Federal Government to look into the issue to avoid the country witnessing another strike especially with the coming of elections.
