The Police in Lagos last Wednesday arraigned a lorry driver, Vincent Enyesiobi, for allegedly causing the death of a commercial motorcyclist, Mr Odera Obiako.

Enyesiobi, 54, is standing trial before an Ejigbo Magistrates Court in Lagos on a two-count charge of dangerous driving and causing the death of a motorcyclist.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Oladejo Balogun, told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 27,  2010 on Odo Isut Road, Igando, Lagos.

Balogun said that Enyesiobi drove a tipper with registration number AW 733 KJA dangerously on the public highway which caused Obiako’s death.

He said that the accused tried to overtake the motorcyclist but could not and while trying to manipulate the lorry, he (Enyesiobi) hit him from behind.

“The accused also damaged the deceased motorcycle with registration number QU 159 BDG.

“He drove the truck dangerously without regard to other road users,’’ Balogun said.

He said that the offence contravened Sections 27 and 28 (1) of the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs Maimunat Folami, granted Enyesiobi bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till January 26 for trial.
