Don Condemns Attack On Amaechi, Abe Oyigbo Assures Gov Of Support
A lecturer with the University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Steve Wordu, has condmned the recent attack on the Rivers State governor, Hon. Chibuike Amaechi and his entourage during the last Ogoni Day celebration in Bori.
Dr. Wordu, a lecturer in the Department of Sociology who made the condemnation in an exclusive interview in his office on Tuesday stated that the Ogoni Day celebration was not a political gathering as to attract political reactions.
He said such violent act was against the philosophy of non-violence as preached and practised by the late environmental activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa.
He explained that since most of the dignitaries which graced the event cut across the entire Niger Delta region, it behoved the leadership of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) to provide security at the event.
According to him, people like the President General of Ogbakor Ikwerre, Chief Sampson Agbaru, elderstatesman Edwin Clark among others only underscored the importance of the event not only to the Ogoni people but the entire Niger Delta.
He called on MOSOP as a responsible organisation to apologise officially to Governor Amaechi and the people of Rivers State.
Meanwhile, the people of Oyigbo Local Government Area have assured the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of total support during the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
The Vice Chairman of the council, Hon. Innocent Ajaelu gave the assurance in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
Hon. Ajaelu also assured of the support of the people for Hon Magnus Abe, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Rivers South East, Hon. Barry Mpigi, the candidate for Tai, Eleme Oyigbo federal constituency as well as Okechukwu Akara who won the Rivers State House of Assembly primaries of the area.
The council vice chairmen described the various party primaries of the party in the area as very transperant, and stressed the need for those who failed during the primaries to accept the results in good faith.
Hon Ajaelu also urged both indigenes and non-indigenes in the area to participate fully in the forthcoming voters registration exercise as that would create an opportunity for them to participate in the general elections.
