The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), was on Wednesday blamed for the state of the sport in the country.

A former Enugu State boxing coach, David Nnamonu, told newsmen that the NBF must begin to work immediately to redress the situation if the standard of boxing must not deteriorate further.

Nnamonu accused the federation of failing to map out strategies of improving amateur boxing in Nigeria.

He said the NBF had also neglected to recognise fighters who won laurels for the country by involving them in NBF activities.

He stressed the need to initiate programmes to keep young boxers busy by organising training programmes and competitions for them.

He called for regular contests for boxers both at state, zonal and national levels.

He disclosed that he decided to set up a boxing academy as his contribution to the development of the sport in the country.
