Clark Tasks Ogonis On Saro-Wiwa’s Ideals
An elder statesman chief Edwin Clark has charged the Ogonis in Rivers State to remain committed to the ideals for which Ken Saro Wiwa and other Ogoni leaders died for.
Clark who said this at the 19th Ogoni Day celebration in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area also condemned the resurgence of violence among communities in Ogoniland.
Represented by Prof Saliba .D. Mukoro, Clark however commended the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) for its non-violent approach to the issue of environmental degradation by multinational companies.
But he had a word for MOSOP leadership, advising them to embark on constructive engagement with the people of Ogoniland with the view to ensuring peace in the area.
In a solidarity message, the president of the Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation, Chief Sampson Agbaru described the Ogonis and the Ikwerres as inseparable entity in the Niger Delta struggle, assuring that the two ethnic nationalities would continue to work together for the advancement of their common interest and goals.
Also speaking, the former secretary to the Rivers State Government Mr. Magnus Abe said that the present administration in the state had placed the development of Ogoni on the front burner.
Abe who is a senatorial aspirant for the Rivers South East Senatorial district warned the youths against being used by some politicians to perpetrate evil.
In has speech, the president of MOSOP, Mr Ledum Mitee warned against money politics in the forth coming general elections.
He also announced his intention to step down this year in the leadership of MOSOP.
