The Avian Influenza Control Office in Katsina State has commenced the disinfection of major live bird markets across the state to prevent a possible outbreak of the disease.

The project coordinator in the state, Dr Isah Abba, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Katsina.

Abba said the exercise which started in December 2010, became necessary because of the harmattan season.

“The whole exercise is aimed at preventing birds brought to the markets from being infected with the disease and also to reduce the risk of spread of infection in the event of an outbreak”, he said.

He also said the office planned to carry out a similar exercise in the two international border markets in Mai’adua and Jibia towns.

According to him, a large number of live birds are being brought to the markets from  neighbouring Niger Republic.

“So far, we have been to Charanchi, Kankara, Batsari, Dutsinma and Mashi markets and we hope to visit Katsina, Funtua and Daura markets soon”, he said.

Abba said the exercise which was being conducted twice a week in each market, would continue up to the end of March when the harmattan season would have subsided.

He said desk officers also conduct passive and active surveillance as part of measures to check the outbreak of the disease.
