All African Games Nigeria To Feature In Triathlon Event
Nigeria will participate in the triathlon event at the 10th All Africa Games in Mozambique in August, Dr Lanre Glover, President, Nigeria Triathlon Union (NTU), has said.
Triathlon is a three-legged sport, consisting of swimming, cycling and running to be performed by one athlete.
Glover told newsmen in Lagos after a board meeting of NTU that Nigeria had expressed willingness to feature in the event at the Games.
“The board met to discuss the programme of activities for the year and our priority is to participate in the forthcoming All Africa Games.
“We will organise training for our coaches and other technical officials in Lagos in March to prepare them for the Games and the National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt in June.
“We also intend to have a championship in Port Harcourt before the sports festival,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria had great potential in the sport and would do well at the Games and other championships.
“Our only challenge is clean water and we are working on that but we have good cyclists and runners.
“The union is partnering with Rev. Moses Iloh who has a cycling club to train cyclists which is the third leg of the event.
“This is a new sporting event in Nigeria but it is growing, we had a championship last year in Lagos and the turnout of the participants was encouraging.
“The success of last year’s championship has motivated our sponsors to express willingness to continue with their sponsorship of the championship,” Glover said.
The triathlon union was formed in 2008 in Lagos.
