Rivers Karate For U-18 Shotokan Championship

Rivers State Karate Association is among teams invited to participate in the forthcoming 15th edition of the Nigeria Association of Shotokan Karate tagged ‘N.A.S.K under 18 Karate championship 2010,” billed to hold this weekend at the American International School, Lagos.

This was made known recently by the Head coach of Rivers State Karate team, leader Yacob Kingsley O. Ewelic, in an exclusive interview with Tidesports at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Sports complex, Port Harcourt on Monday.

According to him, all Karatakas are expected to be at the venue on time for accreditation as any body who does not would be disqualified.

He also said that Karatekas are to dress properly with appropriate Kits, especially, mouth guards for athletes doing kumite.

He maintained that all coaches and athletes are expected to show a high level of discipline throughout the championship saying that, any dispute should be handled in a calm and respectable manner.

In Jiyu Kumite all the rules of World Karate Federation, (W.K.F), and illegal body contact will be severely penalised.

Meanwhile, Categories to be competed in the tournament include six years and under, 10-12 years (male and female) 13-15 years (male and female) 16-18 years (male and female).

The state Karate boss said that Kihon Ippon Kumite will be in black and Blue Belts, Brown to Black belt while the attacking techniques will be Jordan tsuki, Chudan tsuki, and mac geri Chudan, Children will be judged on thorough and effective attacking techniques and correct and effective counter attacking techniques.Takedowns are not allowed.
