Polio: Two Billion Children, Vaccinated Since 1985’

Not less than two billion children worldwide have been vaccinated against polio through the polio plus programme of the Rotary Foundation since 1985.

The president of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, District 9140, Rotarian Georgiana Ngeri-Nwagha disclosed this in a paper entitled “Fostering’ World Peace” presented at the first Rotary Foundation International Night/Fundraising organised by the Rotary club of GRA.

Rotarian Nwagha said that the Rotary foundation has also carried out other humanitarian activities including the provision of water, Medical care, literacy programme, micro credit and other essential services to people in need.

According to her, the foundation has also helped in relief operations during natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods,’ while various educational programmes have been floated across the world.

She explained that Rotary Club embarked on these not only to foster World Peace but enhance  the improved condition of humanity.

While describing Peace as a vital ingredient for human development, she posited that it is her conviction that everyone, not only Rotarians, have a  role to play in fostering World Peace not only through actions, but by promoting peace in our homes and immediate environment.

In his welcome address, the president Rotary club of Port Harcourt GRA, Professor Winston Bell-gam said that the club has been rated the second in the World after the Catholic Church interms of international networking.

“When we take into consideration the population of Rotarians in the world compared with the Catholic  Church, we can computationally illustrate that we have the most intense per capita and so the most penetrated involvement Priven at the club level in the world.”

Prof. Bell-gam said that the fundraising  was to reaffirm the spirit of giving which the club promotes.

The event also witnessed the recognition of five Paul Itaris fellows among whom are Michael Ogolo, a Port Harcourt based comedian Regina Daku-Osika, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo and two others.
