Nsukka Local Government Council has launched a customized sanitation bags with the inscription “Keep Nsukka Clean, the Partnership that Works”.

The Tide source reports that the bags would be used by the council’s refuse collectors during house-to-house collection of waste in the area.

The Secretary of the council, Mr Ofobuike Igwebueze, said that it would be an offence for any resident to drop refuse in any of the bins within the city after the sanitation bags had been distributed.

“Refuse collectors will go from house to house to collect waste bagged with the bags at subsidized rate of N50 per bag.”

“The measure will stop indiscriminate littering of waste within the city,” he said.

Igwebueze said that the legislative arm of the council had recently passed a bye-law on waste collection and separation, which had been signed into law by the Chairman, Mr Tony Ugwu.

“The present administration is determined to restore the lost glory of Nsukka as the cleanest city in the country.

“Clean environment will enhance good health of residents,” he said.

The council scribe said that the bye-law would not conflict with the operations of the Enugu State  Agency (ESWAMA), stressing that the council only collects waste while ESWAMA had the responsibility of disposing waste.

“Collection of waste is the responsibility of local government councils,’’ he said.

Igwebueze urged residents to cooperate with the approved refuse collectors in the discharge of their duties.

Mr Christian Ezeugwu, the Supervisory Councilor for Health and Mr Paulinus Eze, Special Assistant to Chairman on Media, were among top officials present during the inauguration.
