A Port Harcourt – based Estate Surveyor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Chief Collyns Owhondah, has advocated for the creation of State Police in the country.
Chief Owhondah said that the creation of State Police would lead to lasting peace and proper security of lives and property across the states of the federation.
The PDP chieftain who made the call while fielding questions from newsmen during his declaration of intention, to contest for the House of Representatives for Port Harcourt Local Government constituency 11 argued that state controlled Police would lead to better security for the country.
According to him, if state governments are legally empowered to have their Police force, they would adequately provide good healthcare services, better accommodation for the officers and men of the force as well as members of their families.
He said that if voted into the House, he would lobby other members to see how Nigeria could adopt the American style of federation, while the issue of environmental degration in the Niger Delta would be addressed.
Chief Owhondah also stressed the need for companies in the Niger Delta to provide employment opportunities for youths in the region and commended Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi for his level of development in the state.
