A House of Representatives aspirant in Enugu State, Dr Martin Chukwunwike, has warned the National Assembly against interfering in the affairs of political parties.

Chukwunwike was reacting to the bid by the federal legislature to be automatic members of the NEC of parties.

He told newsmen  in Enugu that the legislature had no business in party affairs.

“Political parties are separate from the National Assembly. Their job is to make laws for Nigerians and not to interfere in the affairs of political parties.”

“Parties should be allowed to decide who should be in their NEC and not the legislators. People will see it as a self-driven motive,’’ the aspirant said.

Chukwunwike, aspiring to represent Awgu/Aninri/Oji River Federal Constituency on the platform of the PDP, said he was in the race to ensure that his people were adequately represented.

“For the past eight years, my constituency has been poorly represented at the House of Representatives and if given the opportunity, I will ensure that the voice of my people is heard,’’ he said.

Chukwunwike, a former Commissioner for Health and then Education in Enugu, advised politicians to always have a profession before joining politics.

“People should be professionals in their areas before joining politics so that they will have something to fall back on if they fail to win elections,’’ he said.

He noted that people saw politics as ‘a do-or-die affair’ because they had no other business to sustain themselves and their families.

“We should play the game with every sense of responsibility. If you want to be in politics, play it from election to election; don’t be a seasonal politician,’’ Chukwunwike advised.
