Members  of the Dr Goodluck Jonathan/Sambo  Presidential  Campaign  Organisation, South East Zone , have  advocated for rotation of power  that  should be conducted on the basis of existing  geo- political zones of the country and not on the pre-1914  North-South divide.

Making their feelings known in a   10-point communique  issued at the end of their one day “Town Hall Meeting”, held on Sunday,  at Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, the people reasoned that  furthermore , the principle of rotation should be binding on all political parties as a reflection  of the unique history, needs and imperatives of the Nigerian federation.

Their words: “ Henceforth, rotation of power should be designed  to immediately  accommodate the zone that have not  exercised the power of the presidency  and  then, it should next continue to those that have exercised such powers for the least periods of time in the past. That means that the South-South should be supported for the presidency in 2011, and that the South East should follow next. This is the positions of most of our leaderships , Ohanaeze  Ndigbo, as the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, and most Igbos”.

The meeting which was chaired by the former chief judge of Enugu State, and one time President- General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Justice Eze Ozobu,  said: “We endorse the process of consultations , and support the structured  and well –calibrated pronouncements of the public organs of the Igbo nation , especially , the South East Governors’ Forum, Houses of Assembly and Ohaneze Ndigbo on the unfolding contests for national power in the general elections of 2011″, they further stressed.

The communique, therefore, urged leaders in the country and  polity to pursue peace and unity, and embrace faith  and progress through sustained principles  and policies of power  and practices that advance  justice,  and that “ seek to specifically redress past and present imbalance in our  national   affairs , to  ensure fair representation and access to national power of all groups in Nigeria”.

While calling on the political, socio-cultural  and civil organisational leadership in the South East zone to work and give maximum effect to the support pledged to President  Jonathan, the meeting also urged Dr Jonathan to continue to do justice to the positive testimony of the South East Governors and the massive confidence of the people.

According to them, the governors of the zone had made public testimony that they have enjoyed unparalleled  collaborative goowill  in search for solutions to the many concerns of the zone from President  Jonathan , in the short period he has been in office.
