Facilities In New Sports Complex, Ready December
Facilities in the new Adokiye Amiesiemieka sports complex would be ready for test-running by January.
The assurance was given by the consultant on the project, Mr. Isa Mohammed when a delegation of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the 17th National Sports Festival inspected the complex on Thursday.
Mohammed said one of the challenges which had hindered speedy completion of the project has been bad weather, but noted that work has improved tremendously since the rains subsided.
He assured that by December 2010, work would have reached 70 to 80 per cent competition stage.
“We are still working on the various access roads despite the challenge of the raining season. Hopefully, by December we would have achieved 70 to 80 percent completion on all project sites,” Mohammed said.
On compliance with international standards, the consultant said regular meetings are being held with the National Sports Commission in order to be on track.
Reacting, team leader and Secretary of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), Aba Yola, expressed satisfaction with the kind of facilities earmarked for the new complex.
He urged the contractors to recruit more workers and work day and night in order to meet the deadline.
Some of the facilities inspected in the new Sports Complex include swimming pool, hockey pitches, baseketball courts, games village, football pitches among others.
The team later visited Liberation Stadium Elekahia, Port Harcourt Club, Alfred Diette Spiff Sports Complex and the Agbani Darego hall.
A communiqué is expected after the meeting of the MOC and the Local Organising Committee.
The Sports festival would hold in Port Harcourt in February, 2011.
