The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, has urged the Anambra government to improve the laboratory facilities and staff strength at its College of Health Technology, Obosi.

An accreditation team of the council, led by Chief Innocent Ugwuegbulam, made the call in Awka on Wednesday, when it visited the state’s Health Commissioner, Prof. Amobi Ilika.

Ugwuegbulam expressed concern over the institution’s student-staff ratio, poor condition of the library, classroom blocks and equipment.

He said: “We found out that there are students who never handled any laboratory equipment and there is no point having 200 students with two lecturers; it is not fair.”

The team leader urged the state government to equip the library with current journals and text books, as well as improve the laboratory equipment at the Onitsha General Hospital.

Responding, the commissioner gave assurance that the state government would improve on problem areas identified to ensure the full accreditation of the institution.

He said, “the state government is committed to meeting the health indices of the MDGs in the state before the 2015 deadline.”
