Water Bills: Enugu Plans Legal Action Against Debtors

The Enugu State Water Corporation (ESWC) says it will take legal action against residents of the state, who refused to pay their water bills.

Mr Chima Nriji, Public Relations Officer of ESWC, said in Enugu on Tuesday that residents of Ekulu Pottery Area along Iva-valley in the capital city had always failed to pay their bills.

Nriji told our correspondent that the corporation had to disconnect the area because they insisted they would not settle their bills.

He said, “We have disconnected them and we must make them pay for the services already rendered to them.

“These people are unpatriotic. People have been complaining of not having water, now that they have water, they are refusing to pay.

“It is an offense for them to receive our services and refuse to pay.”

Nriji, who noted that water was an essential commodity, explained that the corporation would not be able to function effectively if people refused to settle their bills.

“Water is an economic and vital thing. For the corporation to improve and sustain its services, money must be involved.

“Water users should appreciate the efforts of Enugu State Government by paying their bills.

“How do we sustain the corporation, when we depend only on the government to fund us? Let us help the government by paying our bills,’’ he said.
