Rivers To Name Model Schools After Eminent Citizens
The Rivers State Government says it would name the 24 new model secondary schools being built by the present administration after prominent Rivers indigenes that have contributed immensely to the development of society.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, disclosed this on Wednesday night while briefing Government House correspondents on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Port Harcourt.
Mrs. Semenitari said the executive council resolved to immortalize the reverred and respected Rivers persons that made useful inputs to the development of society and mankind, noting however that such names would be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for approval.
The Commissioner also hinted that the executive council had constituted a committee for the third anniversary of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s administration headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Magnus Ngei Abe with some commissioners as members.
According to her, “as part of activities marking the event, the state government would be launching a programme tagged 60 in 60 days which is to lead to the commissioning of 60 health centres in 60days”.
She explained that council took the decision because it noted with dismay that whereas over 70 primary health care centres were operational, residents of the state were not patronising the health facilities as they should and that government needs to encourage them particularly in the rural communities.
Mrs. Semenitari said the executive Council equally considered the report from the Evo Diocese of the Anglican Communion regarding encroachment on the property of Archdeacon Crowder Memorial Girls School (ACMGS), Elelenwo, leading to destruction of the school fence and subsequent robbery attack on the school and warned the communities around the institution to desist forth with.
The Commissioner said the council also resolved to warn anyone involved in the case of trespass on the school or any other public institution to remove such structure without further delay as any arrest in connection with encroachment would make the owners lose the property and be prosecuted.
