Rivers LG Elections Hold, April

The 2011 local government elections in the 319 wards and 23 local government areas of Rivers State would hold on  April 16, next year.

Chairman, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. Nimi Briggs, who announced this during the formal presentation of the 2008 local government reports to the state government said the election would commence this month with expression of  interest by political parties and .indication of dates and venues for primaries.

Briggs said primaries and submission of names of candidates to the commission begins and ends in February while electoral campaign would also begin and end in the same month.

He said the commission will commence screening of candidates presented by political parties in March and subsequently publish names of successful candidates on March 19.

According to him, other electoral processes lined up in March include publication of names, unit numbers and location of polling stations/units and publication of notice of polls in wards.

The RSIEC chairman also said the commission would in March next year display the  voters register in wards  and polling units.

He said the election would hold on 16th April while the run off and re-run election are slated for 23rd April, 2011.
