Prepare For Africa, Olympic Games Early – Obisia
Nigeria’s preparations for the 2011 10th All Africa Games should begin immediately to avoid a repeat of the 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi where no Nigerian boxer advanced to the semi-finals.
In addition, the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) must draw up a sustainable programme to arrest the downward trend of the sport, the national boxing coach, Obisia Nwankpa, said in Lagos on Wednesday.
Only one boxer of the five boxers at the Games made it to the quarter-finals.
Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, Nwankpa stressed the need to organise regular national competitions to scout for talents.
He recommended participation in regular international competitions for such discovered boxers, as that was the best way to evaluate them.
Nwankpa, who was dropped from the team to the Games in the Indian capital declared:
“Our preparations for the All Africa Games and the 2012 Olympics must begin now.
