Obi Urges Anambra People To Vote Credible Candidates
Governor Peter Obi has urged the people of Anambra State to vote for credible candidates with people-oriented programmes in the forth coming local council election.
Obi gave the advice on Friday in Onitsha while addressing participants at the 9th Ofala Festival in honour of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.
“Credible leaders in the local government councils would help to complement what we are doing from the state capital about the welfare of our people in the state,’’ he said.
He also said that the state was ready to receive the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan on Friday, October 15, adding that the visit of Mr. President was a great blessing to the state.
According to Obi, the president’s visit will enable him to see “first hand, the developmental needs of the state’’.
“ We want the Federal Government to declare Onitsha as an economic zone in order to facilitate its development,’’ the governor said.
Obi assured the people that the state government would accord due priority to the development of Onitsha, saying that it would reconstruct all the bad roads in the city after the rains.
The governor, however, called on the people to keep a clean and healthy environment and cooperate with government in its determination to improve the well-being of the people.
Earlier, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, commended the President for tackling the problems of Niger Delta as well as unemployment and insecurity.
Achebe also condemned the recent bomb attack in Abuja and sympathised with the families of the victims.
“Unfortunately, violence marred the country’s 50 years celebrations.
“Shedding innocent blood is never a dignified way to fight for a cause”, Achebe said.
The traditional ruler appealed to the Federal Government to complete the reconstruction of the Onitsha-Enugu expressway, walling of the Onitsha army barracks, resuscitation of the Onitsha Water Scheme and commencement of work on the proposed 2nd Niger Bridge.
“We are also asking for the Independent Power Project (IPP) and a naval base in Onitsha,’’ Achebe said.
