The new traffic lights installed in parts of Enugu metropolis at about N192 million are to be inaugurated on November 15, a top government official, has said.

Mr John Egbo, the Commissioner for Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), made this known in an interview with newsmen in Enugu recently.

The traffic lights, designed to ease traffic congestion in the coal city, had yet to be powered, because they were still being programmed.

“The computer hardware for effective operation of these lights have yet to be been installed. It will take about two weeks for the job to be completed,’’ Egbo said.

The eight traffic lights include those located on Rangers Avenue/Presidential Road, Edozie/Ziks Avenue and Bissala/Chime Avenue.

Some motorists, who spoke on the development, commended the government for providing the traffic lights as it would restore sanity to the bad driving habits prevalent in Enugu.

Mrs Edith Udeh, a Civil Servant, said it would not only reduce excessive speeding in the city, but also assist in traffic control and help to decongest traffic during peak periods.

Mr Joseph Odenigbo, a commercial bus driver, noted that provision of the traffic lights was commendable but complained that it sometime delayed vehicular movement.

Meanwhile, the commissioner said that a task force had been constituted to remove all abandoned vehicles on the streets of Enugu as part of measures to promote easy flow of traffic.

Egbo said the exercise was delayed until now because government was looking for appropriate site to designate as public parking lot for evacuated vehicles.

The commissioner noted that the exercise would continue until all abandoned vehicles that constituted a clog on traffic flow were removed from the streets of Enugu..
