Bureau Urges Imo Lawmakers To Declare Assets
The Director, Code of Conduct Bureau in Imo State, Mr Benson Anokam, on Wednesday, in Owerri, urged aides to members of Imo State House of Assembly to declare their assets.
Anokam made the call when he visited the legislature to demand the list of political aides from the Speaker, Goodluck Opia.
He reminded the aides that it was mandatory for all public workers to declare their assets, to avoid mismanagement of public funds.
The director threatened that the bureau could take legal action against any worker who failed to declare assets.
He further said the bureau could forward to the appropriate authorities, names of defaulters, with a view to stopping them from holding public office.
Anokam advised that every asset, including inherited ones, should be declared for record purposes.
Responding, the Deputy Speaker, Jonas Okeke, on behalf of the Speaker, said the House would always comply with the directives of the bureau, promising to make the list of the aides available.
He said that there was the need for government to review salaries of workers.
Okeke said that contrary to belief in some quarters, politicians were not misappropriating public funds.
