Animal Protein Exposes Women To Bowel Disease – Expert
Experts say high animal protein intake may increase women’s risk of health conditions called Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
This report, published by researchers from the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bacteria, Paris in American Journal of Gastroenterology, said the disease is characterised by severe inflammation of the digestive system.
A medical Practitioner based in Port Harcourt Dr. Stanley Okechukwu, said in an interview with The Tide that women who consumed diets high in animal protein including fish are three times more likely to develop IBD than those whose diets contained low or moderate amounts of animal protein.
Okechukwu, explained that the highly toxic end product of meat, may alter the “natural balance of beneficial bacteria in the colon, causing a damage to the digestive system”.
He further said other conditions that may result from this damage include Crohn’s disease and ulcers, and advised women to cut down on their meat consumption.
