2011: Abe Envisions Better National Legislature
A senatorial aspirant in Rivers State and former Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Magnus Ngei Abe, has predicted a more people-focused federal legislature in 2011.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Mr. Abe expressed optimism that the next Legislature would be more sensitive to the plight and interest of Nigerians in 2011 because of the experience the legislature has gained since 1999 and the need to be more people centered.
“I believe I have something to offer if given the opportunity, we can redirect conversation to what happens to every Nigerian. Indeed, after twelve years of democracy, discourse can now begin to centre on the people who make up the nation and we need experienced, people that can chart this course effectively”, he said.
The former Secretary to the State Government expressed disappointment at the level of poverty in the country and stressed that the country needs people who understand the dynamics of quality representation in the next legislature, because “we cannot discuss Nigeria without the people”.
“I’ve looked at our polity; the quality of life of our people, not just in my senatorial district, is poor. I’ve also looked at the income of the country, potentials and possibilities of Nigeria, I’m not satisfied that Nigerian people are not getting the best out of their country”.
Mr. Abe, who is seeking mandate of the people to serve as Senator of the Federal Republic, representing Rivers East Senatorial Zone under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Nigerians are beginning to realize that the important issue is to identify those that will serve selflessly and provide the needed positive change in the country.
As a Lawyer, former Lawmaker, Commissioner and Secretary to State Government, he said, “I have the requisite experience to discuss and present the problems of the grassroot in the federal legislature”.
“I believe in Nigeria, I have faith in the youths as future leaders of our country and with a display of maturity in tackling problems of development such as security and poverty, I think we can make the difference:, Abe summarized.
He congratulated President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Governor Chibuike Amaechi for making strong impact in the lives of ordinary people.
