Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State has approved the immediate release of N240.7 million for the payment of pensions to retired civil servants.

This was contained in a statement issued in Katsina yesterday  by Alhaji Maharazu Ahmed, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Press Affairs.

It said that the amount would be used to pay the gratuities and pensions of the retired state civil servants for the second quarter of this year.

The statement said the figure brought to a total of N444.6 million the amount so far released for the payment of pensioners in the state.

It reiterated the state government’s determination to discharge its obligations to its retired civil servants “who committed their productive lives to the service of the state”.

The governor enjoined the retirees to make the best use of their retirement period in the service of their communities, especially in guiding and counselling youths in their areas.

The statement also said that  the state governor had approved N249.5 million as sundry payments to contractors handling the 252 Makera Housing project in Katsina, whose contract was  awarded at more than N891.3 million.

More than N547.7 million had earlier been paid to the contractors handling the project, thus raising the total amount so far released to the contractors to N797.2 million, the statement added.

The estate expected to be completed by September, would consist of 252 two-bedroom houses, internal road network, an independent water supply scheme, electricity supply and other infrastructure.
