The FRSC, Enugu Command, says 27 road accidents were reported between January and June in the area as against 50 in the same period in 2009.

Mr Edward Iheme, the Senior Route Commander, told  newsmen on Friday that 16 persons died, 65 injured, 3,290 offenders apprehended and 3,442 offences booked within the period.

“In 2009, 183 persons were injured, 24 killed, 3,304 and 4,093 offenders booked within the period.

“From the figures, you can see that road traffic crash is going down while offenders and offences committed are on the increase,’’ he said.

He suggested ways of improving safety on roads to include, Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS).

Iheme said that 18 fleet operators were registered with the commands ongoing fleet registration exercise.

The commander further said: “The Driving School Standardisation Programmes (DSSP) and certification of driving schools embarked upon by the commission contributed toward the improvement of safety on roads.

“Eight driving schools in the Enugu Command have been approved and they are, Okenwa, JU- Nigro, Jamanthy, Paragon, and Chibros driving schools.”

“Others located at Nsukka include, Uzu, N and N as well as Mest Institute for Driving.’’

He said the essence of approving them was to ensure that those who wanted to obtain National Drivers Licence must first pass or acquire training through them.

He said that 98 per cent of drivers in Enugu did not apply the rules of roundabout while driving, hence the current campaign embarked by the command since February over use of roundabouts.

Iheme enjoined all motorists to collaborate with FRSC to ensure safety on roads as Emergency Call Centres had been established in event of road traffic accidents.

He gave the numbers as: 08077690478 and 08077690265.
