Anambra Holds LG Polls, Dec 4

The local government elections in Anambra have been scheduled for Dec. 4, chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) , Prof Titus Eze has said.

Presenting the notice of election on Friday in Awka, Eze said that a detailed time table would be released on Monday, while activities would be expected to take off immediately.

“With reference to the Anambra State Electoral Law, which allows us to give 21 days notice and consistent with the provision of the Electoral Act, 2006, which allows us to give 150 days, we are now trying to fix Dec. 4, 2010, for LG elections in Anambra state,” he said.

The chairman said duly completed forms for the chairmanship position for the 21 council areas and councillorship positions of 327 wards in the state should be delivered to the commission’s headquarter latest on Oct 22.

Answering questions from newsmen, Eze said: “within the time we are arranging the local government elections, the state government can put up any form of local government administration that it wants”.

Already Governor Peter Obi, is planning to inaugurate transition committees for the 21 LGAs of the state.
