Wrong Selection, Poor Tactics Ruined Eagles In – Bonfrere
Former Super Eaglescoach, Johannes Bonfrere has attributed the dismal performance of the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the on-going 2010 FIFA World Cup to wrong selection of players and poor tactics.
Speaking in a monitored interview, Bonfere, pointed out that Lars Lagerback did not adopt the right strategies in all the three matches Eagles played in South Africa. He, however, noted that they were very delightful to watch their game against Argentina in the opening match.
According to him, some players were fielded out of position, which contributed to their not too-impressive performance, thus no other person should be blamed but Coach Lagerback.
“Unarguably, Lagerback adopted wrong tactics and formations in the three matches. The starting line ups were not the best, and he played some players at some strange positions which affected the general performance of the team.
“It was surprising seeing Sani Kaita moved to the right side of the midfield and Afolabi on the left back position. All these contributed to Nigeria’s early exit from the World Cup in South Africa.
It would be recalled that Super Eagles played three games in Group B against Argentina, Greece and South Korea and were able to garner just one point in the group stage of the tournament, recording 0-1, 1-2 and 2-2 results, respectively.
