A Nigerian, Kunle Benjamin, has been sentenced to three years in prison in South Africa for being in possession of 30 stolen World Cup tickets.
According to The Tide’s source, a special World Cup court sentenced the Nigeria after his car was stopped and searched by police in Pretoria, when he was noticed to driving “erratically.”
“As the suspect was acting suspiciously, police decided to search him and the 30 tickets were discovered,” said South African Police spokeswoman, sally de Beer.
Benjamine, according to the police was unable to tell the court how he came to be in possession of the tickets..
FIFA said they discovered that the tickets had been bought by two men on the internet, but their addresses could not be verified.
“This is yet an example of the effectiveness of having dedicated teams to deal with World Cup-related offences,” said de Beer.
More than 5 courts were set up to deal with World Cup related crimes.
The special courts only a few days ago sentenced six men, a Nigerian among them, to 34 years imprisonment following a robbery on some journalists covering the World Cup.
There has been other reports of theft and mugging in South Africa.
Prior to the World Cup, several countries and persons had expressed concerns over the crime rate in the countary and the issue of safety was made a major point by some countries.
It was even mooted at times that the World Cup could have been moved away from South Africa.
But FIFA and Sepp Blatter stood behind the country and pledged to provide adequate security that would deal with the situation.
