The successful completion of an additional nod to the Trans Amadi Gas Turbine Station by the Governor Chibuike Amaechi-led administration has been praised as a giant demonstration of the Rivers State Government’s commitment towards improving socio-economic development in the state.

Chairman, Rivers State Council of National Union of Hotels and Personal Services Workers, Mr. Jeremaih Lezor, who stated this in a message of commendation to the governor, said poor power generation remains a major challenge facing hoteliers’ efforts towards providing enough and affordable comfort and relaxation to customers.

“For you to provide standard services in hotel industry, you must have, at least, one standby generator, and the idea of twenty-four hours light must not be compromised”, he said, and noted that the cost of providing electricity was too expensive for any hotelier who wants to make successful business in any part of the country.

Lezor, however, expressed disappointment that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was unable to evacuate the power being generated by the government’s Independent Power Project, and described the company’s inability as a big discouragement to the bold effort of the Rivers State Government towards finding lasting solution to the lingering power problem.

The hotel union boss urged the Federal Government to expedite actions towards ensuring that such impediments caused either by conflicting policies or bureaucratic bottlenecks were removed.

He maintained that the efforts of the Federal Government towards finding enduring solution to the power problem should start from bold and decisive correction of the lacunas in policies.

Lezor noted that some trade unions were known to have frustrated government’s efforts towards finding solution to the power challenges in the past, and stressed that since power was an issue that affects all sectors of the economy, the government must exercise the political will in policy implementation.

He equally challenged other state governments to emulate Governor Amaechi’s initiative in the area of independent power generation for rapid development of the nation.
