The continuous rise in the ocean level, may lead to the submergence of communities in the littoral states of Nigeria.

A lecturer with the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Babatunde Bolaji disclosed this in an interview with newsmen, shortly after delivering a lecture on biodiversity conservation of rare species in Rivers State at Degema to mark the 2010 world environment day in the state.

Dr Bolaji, who also decried the fast extinction of the rich mangrove swamp of the states emphasised  that the government and the various multinational organisations need to act fast to save the state from the impending disaster.

According to the university don, the  government can do this by checking the rate of pollution in the Niger Delta.

“Companies should be conscious of the environment. The issue of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) should be reinforced for every bit of project, government or otherwise should carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment and the recommended action by the professional, should be followed strictly”, he said.
