The Rivers State Police command says it has commenced investigation into the circumstance surrounding the assassination of the former chairman of the state civil service commission, Chief Anthony Egobueze.

Speaking to The Tide correspondent at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Wednesday, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba said the police already have leads to the perpetrators of the heinous act which would be made known as soon as investigation is concluded.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, Mr Abba noted that most of the incidents of kidnapping are perpetrated by persons from neighbouring states, pointing out that the state government is doing everything possible to fortify its borders with neighbouring communities.

According to the police boss, the command last month arrested 21 kidnappers, rescued nine victims, smashed 17 armed robbery gangs and arrested 80 most of whom were allegedly traced to have come from Abia State.

Fielding questions, the police commissioner said corruption is a nationwide problem and the police is not left out but expressed optimism that crime among police officers and men are being tackled headlong and reduced since his assumption of office.

He assured that any police personnel caught committing criminal offence would be seriously dealt with, pointing out that incivility against members of the public by police officers is being checked and controlled.

Commending the state government for its numerous support and assistance to the command, Mr Abba disclosed that it recently received adequate number of bullet proof vests and helmets from the government while the government takes the training of police children whose fathers were killed in active duty.

The family of any victim of armed robbery attack is paid N1million while government takes over the educational training of his children”, the police boss explained and enjoined members of the public to assist the police in the area of information on criminal activities.
