One Million Households Get Mosquito Nets

The Rivers State Government has distributed more than one million mosquito treated nets within the last one year to households in the state.

The Director, Malaria Control Unit in the state Ministry of Health, Dr Justina Jumbo disclosed this at a one day seminar on malaria control organised by the Mgbuesilaru Women on Mission for Peace, Empowerment and Development Initiative in Port Harcourt.

Dr Jumbo, however, decried the under utilization of the nets  by beneficiaries, a situation she observed had hampered the campaign against malaria parasites in the state.

Represented by Mr. Eke, a staff of the ministry, the Director  said that the government also plans to partner with patent medical vendors to fight the disease.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr Chibuzor Ugwuoha who was represented at the occasion by Dr. George Uzonwanne thanked the women for the event, assuring of the commission’s support.

He also said that the NDDC would soon begin a free medical treatment programme for the people of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Executive Director of the organisation, Pastor Mrs. Christie Iwezor said the Mgbuesilaru Women on Mission for Peace, Empowerment and Development Initiative was formed to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor in the community.

Pastor Mrs. Iwezor also said that the seminar was meant to sensitise people on the need to fight malaria together for better result.
