The south-east zonal office of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on Friday, sensitized traders at the Owerri Main Market on the need for good health habits.

The sensitisation which commenced immediately after the traders’ usual morning prayers, attracted more than 1,000 persons.

In an address, a Senior Technical Officer of the agency, Ms Ijeoma Adibe, told the traders that they were expected to acquire and store fire extinguishers in their shops in case of a fire outbreak.

She also advised them to switch off lights and electric appliances in their shops before leaving for home every day.

She noted that many market fires in the country were caused by careless handling of electricity and electrical appliances.

Adibe further urged the traders to avoid littering the market place with empty “pure water” sachets and other refuse.

She stressed the need to acquire refuse bins to enhance disposal by the relevant agencies.

The office had earlier held similar sensitisation campaigns in schools within and around Owerri township.
