LG Sets-Up 7-Man Fertiliser Distribution Committee
The Onitsha North Local Government in Anambra has set up a seven-man committee for the distribution and monitoring of the N4 million fertilisers allocated to farmers in the area.
Mrs Ngozi Ndife, the Head of Department of Agriculture in the Council, disclosure this in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha.
She said that members of the Committee included the head of the local government administration and that of personnel management.
Others are the Chairperson, All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in the council; the Divisional Police Officer, the local head of the SSS, the head of the local government accounts and herself.
“This is the first time in the last 10 years that N4 million worth of fertilisers is allocated to farmers in this council area by the state government,” Ndife said.
She said the council had resolved to sell a bag of the commodity at a subsidised price of N2, 900 per bag as against the N4,125 per bag in the open market.
Ndife said the large quantity of fertilisers allocated to the Council had gone a long way in disabusing the minds of the people that the commodity was meant exclusively for a privileged class of people.
Also speaking, Mrs Ludu Mba, Chairperson of the Chapter of AFAN, said the association had over 100 members with large farm settlements and promised that the commodity would be distributed in accordance with the laid down procedure.
“We will ensure that only members and genuine farmers get the fertilisers in order not to put the association in problem with security agencies and the state government.
“We must monitor it and do the right thing, so that government will continue to allocate fertilisers to us,” she added.
