Khana LGA Wins Rivers Unity Cup

Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State has won the third edition of the Under 18 clubsides football tournament tagged “Rivers State Unity Cup 2010”, as they defeated WALGA United (Okrika) 5-4 via penalty shoot-out after the game ended goaless in regulation time.

The finals, which was played at the weekend at the Sharks Football Stadium saw both teams play purposeful and entertaining football, especially the exhibition of skills.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tidesports shortly after the match the technical adviser of WALGA United, Sonny Iseiokweinma commended his players over the impressive performances throughout the competition particularly in the finals.

According to him, the match was a good one, because the players impressed him as they played to instruction. The only problem he said, was that they failed to convert their chances.

My brother, you saw it by yourself the boys (players) played well, yes, they lost, but it was a good match, you and I know that panelty shoot-out to decide a game is no man’s game, even the worst and inexperience team can win”, Iseiokweinma said.

The technical adviser explained that late preparation affected the performance of the players as the team was put together just three weeks to the tournament, and they were the last to register.

He further commended the Khana team over their brilliant performances and urged them to keep it up.

Also speaking, the Chief Coach of Khana team, Didi Edward expressed joy over the victory and commended his players over their brilliant performances that enable them to lift the trophy.

The Chief Coach attributed the team’s success to hardwork, determination and discipline.

According to him, one of the major reason for their success was that the team had been playing together for at least five years now.

“I am not surprised that my players won this competition, they have played together for at least five year, that made them to blend and play like a unit”, he said.

Edward used the forum to call on corporate bodies, government and individuals for support, to enable the boys develop their talents.

“As I am talking now, the team is sponsored by the players themselves, no assistance from anywhere”, he added.
