Iriebe Estate Not Ready For Rivers Athletes Ahead 17th NSF

Rivers State athletes preparing for the forthcoming 17th National Sports festival to be hosted by the state, may have to look for alternative camping ground as Iriebe Housing Estate earlier earmarked for the purpose may not suffice after all.

This is due to the slow pace of renovation work at the estate in Oyigbo Local Government Area, which may not be concluded in time.

Head of Department, Facilities and Equipment, Rivers State Sports Council, Evangelist Ezekiel Ordu, disclosed this Thursday to Tidesports in Port Harcourt.

According to Evangelist Ordu who is also a member of the Festival Sub-Committee on Facilities and Equipment, the State government may use the University of Port Harcourt facilities as the next option against the initial  plan of using the Iriebe Housing Estate.

Meanwhile, the numbers One to Six fields have been ear-marked as open stadiums by the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye.

Earlier, members of the Facilities and Equipment Sub-Committee of the forthcoming National Sports Festival suggested that the fields should be used for traditional sports such as wrestling, kokowa, danbe, etc.

The 17th edition of the National Sports Festival comes up November 1st, this year in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
