Housewife Attempts Suicide Over Matrimonial Dispute

A housewife, Kemi Faniyan, has been arrested by the Police for allegedly attempting to kill herself following a dispute between her and her husband, Dejo, of Fatimo area, Ibadan.

The spokeswoman for the Oyo State Police Command, Ms Olabisi Okuwobi, told newsmen last Friday in Ibadan that the husband reported the incident at Mapo Police Station.

Okuwobi said the husband, had on May 27, travelled to Ile-Ife, Osun, and that on May 30, a neighbour called him to say that his wife had locked herself up inside their room since May 28.

“The husband said that immediately, he returned to their house in Ibadan that he observed that the door to their room was locked from inside.

“The husband added that he opened the window only to see his wife on the floor with wire tied round her neck,” Okuwobi said.

She said that police detective later forced the door open and found she was still on the ground, almost unconscious.

Okuwobi said that a television cable was found tied round her neck and that she was immediately rushed to University College Hospital, Ibadan for treatment.

“It was later revealed that the couple had been having matrimonial dispute which led to the husband to relocate their three children to stay with his parents in Ile-Ife,” Okuwobi said.

She, however, said that the wife would be prosecuted for attempted suicide.

In a related development, a father, Saheed Salawu of Oranyan area reported at Mapo Police Station, Ibadan that his son, was found lying dead on the ground with electric wire on his chest beside his house.

According to Okuwobi, the photograph of the deceased, a 13-year-old boy, was taken by police detective and the corpse later deposited at Adeoyo General Hospital, Yemetu Ibadan mortuary for autopsy.
