Fela Wins Three Tony Awards
A recent report at our disposal has it that even in death, the King of Afro Beat, Fela Anikulapo Kuti is still winning countless awards.
In far away United States of America (USA), the late founder of Afro Beats and father of Femi and Seun Kuti won three awards from the just concluded Tony Awards where he had eleven nominations.
The awards all came from a play, Fela which chronicles the true life story of the King of Afro Beats which also brought to the front burner his music, activism and doggedness with the military regimes at that time.
The play became the toast of Americans living in New York and the Eugene O. Neil theatre which was the ground for the premiere of the show witnessed so many people asking more about this musical Icon who helped shape his country’s democracy.
According to our source, the musical has put Nigeria and Fela’s name in the global media since the Broadway hit and different countries of the world have signified interest in having Fela shown in their cities according to the producers because they see Fela as a hero who defied a corrupt and oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.
It was also gathered that the hit Broadway musical which bagged II Tony awards nominations few weeks ago, received three Tony plaques for the Best Choreography, Best Costume Design of a musical and Best Sound Design of a musical.
