Don Decries Rate Of Infant Mortality

The Dean of Graduate Studies University of Port Harcourt, Professor (Mrs) Bene Willie Abbey has put Nigerian’s annual infant and maternal mortalities at 90 per cent, Prof. Abbey said this in her lecture entitled, “Bridging the protein gap with what you have”  at the first Baptist Church, Port Harcourt.

 The don who was also former commissioner for Information in Rivers State attributed the situation on the environment.

“It is our environment, a lot of things are responsible, poverty is one, our environment is another”, she said.

She said that although the government, through  the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) is doing a lot to eradicate poverty, a lot still remains to be done.

According to her, “government had been trying to reduce poverty among the people, the MDG  has been doing that in the developed world, they don’t think about electricity, they don’t think about food, but these are the things we are thinking about here” she said.

A. O. Adeoye said that the lecture was organised to create awareness on the importance of protein in the body.

He also said that it is to let them know their choice of food.

Also speaking, the church secretary, Dr B.E. Idoniboye said that the lecture will be an annual event.
