Community Seeks Govt’s Intervention Over Illegal Dump
Eliozu Community, Oroigwe in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area has appealed to the Rivers State Government to check the indiscriminate dumping of refuse at unauthorised dump by refuse contractors in the area.
The community leader, Solomon Ogbonda, made the appeal on Thursday when he conducted the Ministry of Environment monitoring team, led by Deputy Director, Felix Filima, to the unapproved dump in the area during the every Thursday sanitation exercise at public places, markets and motor parks in the state.
He noted that the dump is posing a serious environmental hazard to the inhabitants of the community, and called on government to come to the aid of the community by clearing the refuse, while also prevailing on those refuse contractors, refuse cart pushers and the general public who are responsible for the dumping of refuse at the unauthorised places to desist from the act or face prosecution.
Ogbonda assured that the community will mobilise the youths to mount surveillance at the site when the government intervention measure is through. This is to ensure that the area is rid of further indiscriminate dumping of refuse, he added.
The community leader commended the Environment Ministry for their quick response to their call and solicited for closer tie between the community and the government with a view to achieving a healthier environment.
In his remarks the monitoring team leader, Felix Filima assured that the impact of government will soon be visible in that direction, promising that a pay loader will soon be assigned to the site as part of intervention measures to control the situation.
