Centenary Celebrations: Gov Chime Hails Committee, Others For Success
As activities marking the Centenary Celebration of Enugu state draws toa climax the State Governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime has commended the Centenary Committee and all those who made the celebration a success.
Governor Chime, who was speaking when he received the Centenary Queen, Miss Ezeobi Chidinma Lillian, at the Government House, described the centenary celebration as a major milestone in the history of Enugu, the Coal City.
The Governor also congratulated the Centenary Queen for a well-deserved crown and charged her to live up to expectations and be a model to the young ones in the society.
According to him, “I congratulate the Queen for the well deserved crown, for you to be “Ambassador” of Enugu the Coal City, the then capital of Eastern Region, you have to leave up to expectation and be a model to young ones.”
The State Chief Executive noted that the beauty pageant contest was included as part of the centenary celebration to celebrate womanhood and recognise their roles in the socio-economic development of the city.
He said that Enugu as a cosmopolitan city belongs to both the inhabitants, the entire people of the old Eastern Region and beyond and therefore required the contributions of the stakeholders to transform the city as a model in Nigeria.
The high point of the visit was the presentation of Suzuki Car and a cheque of two million naira to the Centenary Queen, Miss Ezeobi by Mrs. Clara Chime, the first Lady of Enugu State who also decorated the Queen, the two runners-up and other contestants with the centenary pin.
All the thirteen contestants received cheque of one hundred thousand naira each while the first and second runners-up, Miss Omego Nnenna and Bernice Onuoh collected cheque of one million naira and five hundred thousand naira respectively.
In addition, Mrs. Chime, who came in the company of wives of members of the State Executive Council, presented the Centenary Queen and the two runners-up with Mosquito treated nets and mattresses each.
Responding, the Centenary Queen, a final year student of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus , thanked the wife of the State Governor, and the organisers of the beauty contest for finding her worthy among other contestants as the Centenary Queen.
She also thanked the Governor’s wife for crowning her after the contest, the Governor, for his good works and assured that she would live up to the expectation of the people and join hands to restore the dignity of the Coal City.
Miss Ezeobi hails from Igboukwu, Aguata local government area of Anambra State.
