The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) on Monday, in Abuja vowed to tackle the menace of multiple registration of voters ahead of 2011 general elections.

Mr Emmanuel Umenger, the Director, Public Affairs, told newsmen in Abuja  that the upcoming revalidation of voters register would be  thorough.

He said that an authentic revalidation would guarantee credible elections in 2011.

He urged Nigerians to resist being used by politicians who might want to buy over the electorate to register more than once.

“Multiple registration is a major factor affecting the electoral process and the idea will not continue anymore because INEC is out to frustrate the perpetrators this time around.

“Those who tried to engage in multiple registration during the Anambra gubernatorial election were disappointed,’’ he noted.

Umenger noted that though a date to begin the revalidation has yet to be announced, “it is going to be transparently done’’.

He assured Nigerians that INEC had adopted necessary measures to frustrate attempts by unpatriotic elements who would like to indulge in multiple registration.

“Let the electorate themselves do the right thing and ensure they become democratic”.

“By this they can elect people of their choice and entrench good governance,’’ he added.

He said that the commission intended to sanitise the system through  the use of the services of only the permanent staff and youth corps members.

“The Commission has resolved not to hire the services of ad hoc staff because they are used by politicians in the past to carry out the unlawful act,’’ he said.

He added that the authentic revalidation would facilitate the campaign for “one man one vote”.
