17th NSF: Anambra Targets 14 Gold Medals In Combat Sports

Anambra State has set a target of at least 14 gold medals from combat sports at the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, tagged Garden City 2010.’

Chidiogo Mbanefo, the Director of Sports Operations, Anambra State told newsmen in Onitsha that the strength of the state was more in combat sports that athletics.

Mbanefo said, “We have penciled down at least 2 gold medals each from the seven combat sports apart from athletics.

“The seven combat sports include boxing, kick-boxing wrestling, traditional wrestling, karate, judo and taekwando.

“Our athletes in the combat sports are blessed with strong physique and they had commenced training for sometime now.”

The director gave assurance that the state would definitely improve on its previous performance at the forthcoming festival.

He said: “With the political will and commitment of our Governor, Peter Obi, sports is being given its priority of place in youths development and self discovery in the  state.

“Given our government’s support as well as commitment of our coaches, our athletes will definitely do us proud in Port Harcourt this year.”
