PH Residents Rejoice Over Improved Power Supply
Residents of Port Harcourt City and its environs have expressed joy over what they described as a remarkable improvement in power supply in recent times.
A survey conducted by The Tide shows that for the past days, the usual epileptic state of electricity supply in the city has changed.
Prof. Joseph Okoh of the University of Port Harcourt said in an interview that the power situation has changed from what it used to be.
According to him, “my area in UNIPORT is witnessing a change. We can now see light for hours and this has been sustained.”
The university don who was former deputy vice chancellor, Academics in UNIPORT, commended the government, particularly the Power Holding Company (PHCN) for this feat, and charged them to do everything possible to ensure that the improved power supply does not slide but rather consolidate on the improvement.
He, however, advised that PHCN should try to provide more transformers to boost electricity distribution and also take measures that would re-orient the staff of the company sabotaging the effort of the government in its renewed determination towards improved power supply in the society.
Also speaking in similar vein, Miss Jeniffer Timi, a hoteler in Port Harcourt, agreed that power supply has remarkably improved for about a week.
Timi, who resides in Mile III area of Port Harcourt, expressed joy that unlike before, power supply can now last for between four to five hours, and noted that even when power supply is interrupted, PHCN brings back the light in few hours.
She commended PHCN and urged the company to maintain the improved standard, adding that consumers may not need to grudge over paying their bills.
In the Old Township axis of Port Harcourt, the story appears to be the same. Chief Mike Okwelle, a teacher in a private school in the area said, “to be frank and sincere, there is improvement. Light now comes and stays for longer hours than it used to be.”
Chief Okwelle said in the classrooms, students can learn comfortably because light has improved, adding that even in his residence, his generator now runs for few hours.
Dr. Chidinma Okwaraji, who runs a private hospital in Rumuokwurusi said, “before two days ago when our transformer was said to have developed fault owing to which, the public power supply ceased, there was quite an improvement.
“I thank Power Holding Company of Nigeria for this feat but I advise that they should not relax at it but move further because even the improved state is not enough but however, the company deserves commendation,” he remarked.
The Public Affairs Manager of PHCN in the Diobu Business Unit, Herbert Ani confirmed that the supply situation has gone higher and attributed the new development to what he described as an improvement in generation.
“Yes generation has improved. We hope to continue to improve but we also hope that consumers can reciprocate by living up to their responsibility in payment of bills,” he advised.
