Governor Peter Obi of  Anambra has distributed medical equipment and drugs worth  N450 million to 138 primary health centres and 16 secondary health centres.

Distributing  the items in Awka, Obi said this  was in line with the state government’s resolve to promptly achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

He charged beneficiaries to ensure that the drugs were distributed free of  charge to serve the purpose for which they were meant.

The governor reiterated the determination of the state government to provide an  affordable health system as well as eradicate extreme poverty and hunger in the state.

“This administration is committed to providing infrastructure and empowerment programmes hitherto neglected by successive governments in the state,’’ Obi said.

Also speaking, Prof. Stella Okunna, the Chairman, MDGs Implementation Committee and Commissioner for Economic Planning and  Budget, said the state was making efforts toward achieving the MDGs.

Okunna said  the distribution of   the   medical equipment and drugs marked the end of the 2008 MDGs activities in the state.

She said the 2009 MDGs  programmes to be implemented this year would critically address the needs of  people in the areas of  health, water supply and youth empowerment.

Okunna urged the benefiting health institutions to ensure proper maintenance of  the items.
