Medical Council Backs Amaechi’s Directive On Hospitals Management

The Rivers State council of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria has backed the directives by the Rivers State governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi that administrators should take over the running and management of hospitals in the state.

The state chairman of the association, Dr. Chris Mbata who said this in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt noted that the directives, if implement will enhance professionalism in the health sector.

Dr. Mbata cited the example of countries such as, India, United States of America (USA), United Kingdom and Japan where administrators manage the health sector.

According to him, the health sector of the countries are now reference point for countries like Nigeria and others.

He also said that the council has embarked on the sanitisation of the medical laboratory industry from quacks, stressing that most fake laboratories both in Port Harcourt and other  cities across state have been shut down.

Dr. Mbata hinted that a monitoring mechanism has been put in place to ensure that the affected laboratories no longer reopen for business until they comply with all procedures laid down by the council.

He further disclosed that the National Executive Council of the body will soon visit the south South zone to undertake another round of inspection of laboratories in the zone.
