Grant To Parties Is An Aberration – CNPP
Mr. Emeka Nwachukwu, the chairman Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) in Abia, has hailed the proposed termination of grants to political parties.
Nwachukwu told newsmen in Umuahia that the system where political parties were funded by government was an aberration and abuse of democratic norms.
“With the level of our democratic experiment in the country, it is wrong for government to involve itself in sponsoring political parties as this practice will lead to proliferation of mushroom parties, “ he said.
The chairman said that such practice had bastardised the political environment “because many parties only exist because of the money they received from the government through INEC”. “Some of these parties do not even have a national office in the real sense of it”, Nwachukwu said.
He said that it had become imperative for the number of political parties in the country to be reduced to ensure an effective and competitive political landscape.
“The agitation for the reduction in the number of political parties is in the best interest of the nation, because it will enthrone a healthier competitive environment and a stronger opposition.
“In my view, I will recommend a three party system and once this is announced, all these smaller parties will be forced to collapse into the more vibrant ones”, Nwachukwu said.
He said that this system would make the parties to be economically vibrant as the members would pool their resources together and even source their funds from other external sources.
