Ejiogu Emerges Hero In Enyimba’s Victory Confed Cup
Goalkeeper Chijioke Ejiogu was again at his penalty-saving best as Enyimba stormed back to overturn a three-goal deficit against AS Vita and snatch a ticket to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Ejiogu saved three kicks in a marathon penalty shootout victory for the Peoples Elephants as they eliminated the side from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, the two-time Champions League winners looked all but eliminated from the competition.
But the never say die attitude of the Peoples Elephant was in full force as two goals in the first half by Uche Kalu got them back in the tie.
A third goal in the second half drew them level, but they could find no further goals and the game went to penalties, and Ejiogu time.
The former Julius Berger and Dolphins man once again came up trumps twice during the regular spot kicks. But he was let down by his outfield players.
There was to be no such disappointment though, after they converted their two sudden death efforts, and Ejiogu came up big to deny the Congolese, and take Enyimba through.
Nigeria’s other Confederation Cup representatives Warri Wolves were eliminated after losing 2-0 to CAPS in the second leg, and 2-3 on aggregate.
