Democracy Day Ebonyi holds Sanitation

A special sanitation was held on Saturday in Abakaliki as part of the programme lined-up to mark the 11th year of survival of democracy in Nigeria.

The clean-up specifically took place in Abakaliki,l which now wears a new look in preparation for the Democracy Day celebration and the children’s day anniversary.

The exercise which began at 7. a.m ended at 10 a.m. with the planting of democracy tree at strategic locations as well as filling of potholes with asphalts on the Enugu-Abakaliki-Ogoja highway.

The event was organised by the PDP, Ebonyi State Chapter in collaboration with the state government and the state’s Ministry of Works and Transport.

Mr Abia Onyike, the Chairman, Publicity Sub-Committee on the democracy day celebration said all the 13 council chairmen and coordinators of the development centres in the state were mobilised and allotted sections of the capital city to supervise.

“Each of the chairmen and coordinators were made to mobilise 20 persons from their areas for the exercise. They also came with cutlasses, brooms and shovels, while tippers were hired to cart away all rubbish generated during the exercise,’’ he said.

Mr Dave Umahi,the state PDP Chairman said the initiative was borne out of the fact that Democracy Day celebration was symbolic and the state capital needed to be in a clean and healthy mood.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Environmental Protection Agency led by the General Manager, Dr Chukwuma Okeh supervised the exercise ensuring compliance by the inhabitants and the carting away of refuse generated during the exercise.
